Collaboration: the magic bullet?

Crutchfield asserts that the nonprofit sector is a “complex environment”. I would ask what do you think about collaboration as the 'magic bullet' to deal with this complexity and achieve organizational success . I would say that collaboration attitude of an innovative nonprofit leader will be reflected in a management style that establishes optimal priorities; leverages strengths, encourages staff, promotes creativity, involves stakeholders, and views problems as potential opportunities for improvement. Behold!, many of the aforementioned traits were originally born in the for-profit management field. Some articles we have reviewed highlight (and sometimes criticize) the fact that some non-profit have taken management practices from for-profits… Without wanting to appear as if I am contradicting these claims, I'd say that it's worth copying these innovative practices originally born in the field of business management for the sake of the nonprofit sector's success ... (and in the long run, the community it serves).

  1. Maybe the apparent similarity in strategies are not function of inter-sector copying, but rather evidence of what is “effective,” or what works. Organizations are organizations. Apple to oranges, or apples to animals. I think it’s a human thing, management practices that is. However, if it copying, plagiarism is serious offense. Someone should inform the authorities.
