Advisory from Charity Navigator and Governor Cuomo

I also came across this “ADVISORY” while looking for one of the organizations on the Charity Navigator website, this is clearly something that potential donors should be aware of but may have overlooked in the news. (**The link provided to the information from Governor Cuomo is also very interesting, and will only take a minute to read**)

  1. Does it seem strange that an organization like Charity Navigator that rates financial effectiveness/efficiency has no way of catching misuses of money? How effective is this system if the ratings cannot catch these things? I wonder if organizations are more encouraged to do the right thing because of Charity Navigator's ratings, or if organizations are more likely to stretch the truth so that Charity Navigator doesn't rate them poorly.

While it is obvious that Charity Navigator cannot catch everything, I like that it posts these advisories which are helpful to people looking to donate money.

  2. I think that by posting advisories based on outside reports such as this one, Charity Navigator is taking an important step in encouraging organizations to do the right thing. An organization's finances can't always show whether or not the organization is being ethical, and this is one of the downsides to just rating nonprofits based on the financial information. This may be one reason why the availability of an organization's information is what Charity Navigator has decided to study. I'm thinking that an organization who promotes accessibility of its own information is less likely to be involved in unethical practices.
